FAQs

What does it cost to me a member of SAE at UM?

There are 2 types of members at SAE, Live-out and Live-in.  They both the same costs for annual membership fees, province fees, IFC fees, Health & Safety fees, social budget fee, composite fee, and billing fee.    The Live-in members add in Rent and Food.

Is there a requirement to live-in the chapter house?

There is a requirement to live-in the chapter house of 4 semesters.  The house has 15 bedrooms consisting of mostly double occupancy and single occupancy rooms, with a couple of larger rooms that can be triple occupancy.  Room selection is awarded by a point system that awards points for GPA, house positions held, membership tenure, and a few other measured achievements.

It is possible that if more Sophomores desire to move into the chapter house than are available beds, a member may opt-out of the 3rd and 4th quarter requirement and give up his spot.  This opt-out option is also based on point count, and is only an option if the chapter house is short on space.

Is food included with a Live-in Rooming Agreement?

Yes, a meal plan is a requirement for all live-in members, and is provided by a chef who is in the employ of a national food service company called UpperCrust.  They provide chefs to hundreds of Greek chapters across the US.  The meal plan includes lunch and dinner Monday-Friday, and a light continental style breakfast 7 days per week consisting of cereal, breakfast bars, fruit, toast, bagels, milk, juice, and coffee.  Additionally, members can keep small dorm fridges in their rooms, and the pantry of the house provides an air fryer, toaster oven, hot plates, microwave, pots and pans, and plates and utensils, in the event a member desires to cook food for himself any morning and weekends.

Is there an adult living in the fraternity home?

No, none of the fraternities house a live-in adult.  There is a House Father who resides in Missoula and is an alumni who is available in the event something breaks, the members need assistance, to oversee inspections, and to generally be available for assistance and be the eyes and ears for the housing corporation that owns the property.

Who owns the property at 1120 Gerald Avenue, the fraternity home?

A non-profit corporation called Sigma Alpha Building Corporation was formed in 1933 for the purpose of owning the property and renting it to the SAE, Montana Beta Fraternity members.
