Why SAE

Your Time Spent Here Is Life Changing

What SAE, Montana Beta Stands For:

We have a long established history of excellence at The University of Montana spanning nearly 100 years. SAE in Missoula strives to better prepare students at the UM for life after college with more in your toolbox than just the degree.  Being a part of a group of like-minded young men provides opportunities for deep friendships with shared challenges and experiences rarely ever found over the course of the rest of your life!  Leadership, problem solving, civil responsibility, philanthropy, community, and personal maturation are all accelerated growth areas for all members of SAE, Montana Beta.

Anti-hazing Initiative

While many Greek chapters still adhere to the concept of being a lessor member for a period of time, typically known as a pledge, where you are proving how much you desire to become a full member.  This culminates with a stress filled week that can include lack of sleep, unfair chores, physical and/or mental challenges, and potential for physical and/or mental harm.  SAE has banned those practices nationally.  At SAE, you become a full member within 96 hours of accepting an invite to join by completing online study and testing, and paying the initiation fee.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon has a zero tolerance policy for hazing and was the first fraternity to nationally sign the No-Hazing Charter in 2000. We are committed to creating a safe environment for all of our members. You can learn more about the Fraternity stance and policies on this subject and others by visiting www.sae.net and reading the Minerva’s Shield guidelines.

Philanthropy

SAE members live and enjoy the Greek life. Social and philanthropic activities offer members a chance to meet and connect with others on campus. These experiences add to the overall college life and help members as they graduate into the working world.

The house has recently supported Missoula Food Bank & Community Center, the University of Montana Food Pantry, the YWCA, and the NMDP – National Marrow Donor Program.

Academic Excellence and Support

SAE at the University of Montana respects the primary purpose members are attending UM, which is to obtain a degree with the highest GPA possible. We strive to stretch members capabilities and further develop life skills, all while developing life-long meaningful friendships.

The SAE House at the University of Montana requires members to maintain a 2.75 GPA while enrolled full-time (12+ credits). If a new member doesn’t meet this within their first two semesters, their membership may be revoked. All members must maintain a 2.75 cumulative GPA, or face academic probation, loss of voting rights, leadership opportunities, or membership. SAE mandates study tables twice a week for all freshman to help establish good study habits and for all members who drop below a 2.75 GPA.
